Message goes to 'Outbox', not sent

I composed an email in Outlook and pressed the 'send' button, but the
message goes to the 'Outbox,' not sent.
I need my email sent but it is sitting in the Outbox.

What do I need to do?

Thanks for your help.
I cannot find evidence of a "virus scanner integration" in the add-in
section. I have Office Outlook 2007.
I tried turning off my security software, but the messages still remain in
"Outbox."
When attempting to open the item, I get the following warning:
"Cannot open the item. Outlook has already begun transmitting this message."
