Why doesn't my e-mail get sent when I press the send button?

When I try to send a e-mail in Microsoft Outlook by pressing the send button
, the e-mail is placed in the outbox folder and does not get sent.  To send
it, I have to press the send/receive button.  My e-mail is set up to
send/receive messages every 5 minutes and that also does not work.  I can get
mye-mails by depressing the send/receive button.
