OL07, ' tools>customize>always show full menus' has been checked repeatedly.
when i restart outlook it has reverted back to unexpanded, reduced menus,
and the box is no longer checked.

is there a way to get this to work from one start to another?

Diane,   i wonder if the problem is something more global, since i have the
same issue in Onenote, which also has the drop down menus, unlike other
office programs, which have the ribbon.

Something is definitely causing the programs to not write/save the changes
to the toolbar file. What OS and what user acct type do you use? (Admin,

diane, as a test i added an icon to the outlook toolbar, closed, opened.
icon is there.  so, this has something to with only the menu setting? or
this gets saved to a different file?

Oh. The personalized menus are in a different file - the file remembers the
commands you use the most. The setting to control them is in the registry at
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Toolbars\AdaptiveMenus.  1 = use
adaptive menus.

Are you on vista? The outlook.pip file is at
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office
See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/193006 for XP's path.

xp pro

this is unbelievable. i have tried changing the ....adaptivemenus and the
......autoexpandmenus settings. to 0, to 1, even to 5.  changed the setting
in outlook, or not.  doesn't seem to have any effect. after restarting
outlook it is set back to "show full menus after short delay." i tried
'reset menu and toolbar usage data' and unchecking 'show full menu after
short delay' as well as checking 'always show full menu'.  doesn't help.

if i check the "show full menus" adaptivemenus reg entry sets to 0. when i
reopen outlook it is changed to 1.

something other than registry or outlook settings is controlling it.

Is this a work computer? It can be controlled by the admin, using policies.
If a home computer, did you ever play around with policies and the office
resource kit?  Or use an installation file you got from work?

BTW - the only valid options are 0 and 1. :)

Not a work computer.  at home, not on network. i am the user, with admin
rights.
i know virtually nothing about policies, though i have a vague memory of
being instructed to go there for something in the past. don't remember what.
i just checked policies and for computer and user, under software settings,
there is nothing configured. if there is another spot to check, please let
me know.  remember, i was able to add icon to toolbar, and that stuck.

i believe that i have a copy of office resource kit. never used it. if there
is something in there that might help, let me know.

no installation files from work.

yeah, i know. i was frustrated enough to try '5' and see what happened. reg
was happy to accept 5.  changed it back to 1 or 0 when i changed outlook
options.
