Cursor Jumps to top of Outlook 2007 Email MessageOn a couple of our desktop computers running Office 2007 on Windows XP with
HTML as the Outlook email format, the cursor jumps to the top of the window rather than scroll down as the user is typing a message that exceeds the size of the message window. It happens only from time to time, but the same two people are the only ones having the problem. Any ideas as to the cause or a possible fix? you can compare the options each user has. Start with Tools->options and look at every option. When its enabled, the cursor moves as you scroll up or down. When you press the arrow keys after you use the scroll bar, the cursor is positioned in the page currently in view, not at its last used position. If this is disabled, and the user is using the scroll bar, the cursor would stay in the last used position. This doesn't sound like the description of your problem though. Default is on. Jumping cursors (and other odd keyboard behavior) is often the result of an open mic and the speech to text feature. -- Show quoteHide quoteDiane Poremsky [MVP - Outlook] Outlook Tips: http://www.outlook-tips.net/ Outlook & Exchange Solutions Center: http://www.slipstick.com Outlook Tips by email: dailytips-subscribe-requ***@lists.outlooktips.net EMO - a weekly newsletter about Outlook and Exchange: EMO-NEWSLETTER-SUBSCRIBE-REQU***@PEACH.EASE.LSOFT.COM You can access this newsgroup by visiting http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx or point your newsreader to msnews.microsoft.com. As someone below
said, the cursor is OK: it's the scroll that is problematic. My best guess is in the rush to market the product was shipped with an improperly written procedure. What happens is, when the last visible line wraps, the cursor goes down one line, the screen scrolls correctly, and the first word on the new line is displayed correctly as typed, until the first space (End Of Word) at which point the scroller control jumps to Start Of Page. I've programmed F9 to take me to End Of Page, which minimizes the aggravation, but if I'm working on a passage in mid-document, I have to search for the cussed thing again. I've taken to starting a new doc, and pasting it into place when done. But it's a bug, pure and simple. page. By accident I discovered quite a good fix today: Undo then Redo (Ctrl-Z then Ctrl-Y). This automatically and miraculously takes me right back where I was, but with the willingness of the part of Word to stay put. Somehow, that cycle washes the confusion out of its system. — ciao, all Pat and Diane-
This problem has been reported many times in microsoft.public.outlook.general since Outlook 2007 was first released in '07. I compiled a list of 25 users who reported this (see my post last week in http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.outlook.general/browse_thread/thread/e5b78c8b02ff412b?hl=en .. I just found two more: (26) Mr e: And me! It's enormously annoying, and I can't figure it out. It seems to occur when the characters in a line length are longer than a previous one, but this doesn't seem to happen when the message is still all visible and the scoll button is at the at the top, only if the scroll button has moved, at which point it'll jump back to the top. I'm even condsidering writing emails in haiku until a resolution is found. (27) jingso: Same glitch here and it's driving me insane. I don't know where else to look for answers. I've tried everything I can think of. --As I indicated in my previous post, the problem occurs in Safe Mode as well. --No open microphones are involved in our case. --This is not a case of a randomly jumping cursor; the cursor DOES NOT MOVE! The view pane scrolls down a large distance ONLY in response to a carriage return (an Enter key or the end of a line) instead of scrolling up a small distance. This "smells" more like a bug to me than some malfunctioning hardware sending out random signals. I too have tried everything I could think of, including the Smart Cursoring switch you mentioned. But I have not yet seen any fixes that work. ===> As to the cause, do you use larger than normal fonts, or do you have "zoom" enabled? I ask this because one possible common thread I have seen in a few of these messages is the use of large(r) fonts: 1) Marsha: "The only thing I can think of that might be different in my setup from others is that I use a larger font for messages, since my screen resolution is set high. " 2) Rick at GLAC: "the person using this system likes to use large fonts as it is easier for him to see what he is typing." 3) The unfortunate person in our office stuck with this jumping scroll has bad eyesight, and has zooming enabled. -- Show quoteHide quotekombobulator On Nov 19, 7:46 am, "Pat Adams" <pad***@kka.com> wrote: > On a couple of our desktop computers running Office 2007 on Windows XP with > HTML as the Outlook email format, the cursorjumpsto the top of the window > rather than scroll down as the user is typing a message that exceeds the > size of the message window. I misspoke in my previous post. The cursor does move of course,
but it moves normally, it does not jump around (as sometimes happens when there are touchpad issues). It is the scrolling that is abnormal, but it does not happen randomly, it happens in response to certain keystrokes. I sent the followup back to microsoft.public.outlook.general, where most of the previous mentions of this problem occurred. -- kombobulator I have a user here at work who is also experiencing this issue.
Shes running office 2007 on a windows xp workstation. She is using larger than default fonts, and im not sure about the zoom feature. The issue occurs exactly as described by kombobulator. The cursor stays at the bottom of the message, and the message itself scrolls to the top of the page. I'll be trying various things here and I'll post back if I find a solution. In the mean time... has anyone else solved this?
